How can candidates prepare for an interview with The Washington Post?

Can a candidate ask questions?

Yes, prepare relevant questions for each interviewer to better understand the team, the company culture, the growth opportunities, or any other areas of interest that align with the role.


How much time will the interview process take?

For our interview process candidates should prepare time for the following:

  • Recruiter phone screen with candidate–30 minutes to an hour where we learn more about the candidate and provide up–to–date information about the role.
  • Interview rounds with hiring team --typically two to four rounds with each individual meeting lasting up to an hour.
  • Simulation –this is typically scheduled for an hour to review simulation assignment with one or more people on the hiring team.

Before the Interview

Onsite Interview Tips

  • Silence or turn off phone prior to the interview.
  • Prepare for the trip to the interview location ahead of time.
  • Build in extra travel time for unexpected travel delays.
  • Know who to contact when arriving on site.
  • Business casual attire is recommended.
  • Be on time and prepared.
  • Block time before and after the interview.
  • Have resume and note-taking materials on-hand.

Virtual Interview Tips

  • Check internet and phone connection prior to interview.
  • Be in a quiet and well-lit space.
  • Business casual attire is recommended.
  • Ensure devices are fully charged.
  • Maintain “eye” contact during video interviews. (Quick Tip: Focus on video camera.)
  • Be on time and prepared.
  • Block time beforeand after the interview.
  • Have resume and note-taking materials on-hand.

During Interview

  • Be mindful of personal body language.
  • Take time to understand the questions asked.
  • It's okay to ask for the question to be repeated if needed.
  • Be specific. We recommend using the STAR method when answering interview questions:
    • Situation
    • Task
    • Action
    • Result

After the Interview

  • Send a follow-up note thanking the interviewer for their time.
  • Ask questions to better understand and gain clarity on the role, team, and company culture.
